PANORAMA is co-driven by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), together with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank Group, and other international institutions. It is dedicated to gathering and promoting proven, replicable solutions. The platform breaks down successful cases into replicable “Building Blocks” through a standardized approach, facilitating cross-regional and cross-sectoral knowledge sharing and application expansion, transforming local practices into global solutions. PANORAMA is not merely a case exhibition platform but also a knowledge and action network connecting practitioners worldwide, serving international goals such as the Paris Agreement, the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Before-and-after comparison of the pilot field using Maenam High-Tech’s hydrated water-retaining agent

The case study is based on two typical photovoltaic projects implemented by Maenam High-Tech in Yulin, Shaanxi Province, and Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, proposing an integrated solution of “photovoltaics–water resources–ecology.” The entire solution consists of three core Building Blocks: Solar Infrastructure Integrated with Nature-Based Solutions, Vegetation Recovery and Soil Stabilization, and Sustainable Water Retention Using Innovative Water Retention Agents. By introducing water regulation and water-retention technologies under photovoltaic arrays, Maenam High-Tech formed distributed “micro water storage units” in the soil, significantly increasing soil moisture content and reducing evaporation losses. Based on this, the project achieved notable vegetation restoration results: the survival rate of vegetation increased from approximately 30%–45% under traditional models to about 80%; vegetation coverage increased substantially; soil organic matter content rose by 4–5 times; and wind-sand erosion intensity was reduced by approximately 75%–80%.

This model has effectively broken through the critical bottleneck in dryland regions—“limited water resources hinder vegetation restoration, leading to continued ecological degradation.” At the same time, by reducing dust and heat island effects, it improves the operating environment of photovoltaic systems, decreases the frequency of module cleaning, and saves water resources, achieving synergistic gains in ecological restoration and energy production. This practice demonstrates the innovative application of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in energy infrastructure, providing a systematic solution with quantifiable results and a replicable pathway for dryland and semi-arid regions worldwide.-This selection by PANORAMA not only reflects Maenam High-Tech‘s systemic innovation capabilities in complex ecological environment governance but also highlights the contributions and competitiveness of Chinese enterprises in the global field of Nature-based Solutions (NbS). This model also provides a demonstration pathway for green development under the Belt and Road Initiative, promoting Chinese solutions on the global stage and contributing replicable, scalable practical experience to the sustainable development of dryland and semi-arid regions.

In addition, the implementation and summarization of the project received support from partner institutions, including the State Key Laboratory of Water Engineering Ecology and Environment in Arid Regions and LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd.-39-34

Looking ahead, Maenam High-Tech will continue to deepen key technological innovation, actively advance international cooperation and standards alignment, and promote the global deployment of more high-quality solutions, contributing Chinese wisdom and practical approaches to addressing climate change and ecological challenges.
