As a leader in environmental protection and sustainable development in the region, IARDA has been exploring innovative solutions to meet ecological challenges under extreme climate conditions. In this project, Dr. Mariska, Director of the IARDA Research and Innovation Office, personally led the team. With his deep professional background and forward-looking vision, he led the team to carry out an unprecedented desert greening revolution in the King Khalid Royal Nature Reserve.

The core of the project is to apply the new waterproof and water-retaining material independently developed by Maenam Hi-Tech - Desert Control Water Retainer. This revolutionary product aims to effectively improve the efficiency of soil water use through its unique water-locking mechanism, thereby bringing vitality to the arid and water-deficient desert environment. In the sandy soil test area of King Khalid Royal Nature Reserve, Dr. Marisca and his team conducted a detailed classification based on soil conditions, climate factors and target vegetation types, and planted a variety of plant communities in each area, including trees, shrubs and herbs, to build a multi-level and multifunctional ecosystem. Among them, CarboSoil, which was used as a comparative test, is currently widely used in the landscape engineering of NEOM New City.

In the IARDA project, the research team used three groups of comparative experiments, namely: Maenam Hi-Tech water retainer group, carbon soil (CarboSoil) group and no additive control group, and set up four different experimental schemes for testing:
Red sand experiment:
35 seedlings with a height of 50 cm, added with 20 grams of Maenam Hi-Tech water retainer;
35 seedlings, added with 1 kg of carbon soil;
35 seedlings, no amendments were added (control group).
2a. Sandy loam experiment (large-scale experiment): 9 experimental plots were selected, each with an area of 40 meters × 30 meters;
3 plots were applied with Maenam Hi-Tech water retainer, adding 20 grams per square meter;
3 plots were applied with carbon soil;
3 plots were used as control groups, without additions. 2b. Small-scale mixed vegetation experiment:
Dig pits in an area of 2 meters by 2 meters and plant: 216 tree seedlings (20 cm high);
216 shrub seedlings;
216 herbaceous plants;
1/3 of the trees, shrubs and herbs were treated with 20 grams of Maenam Hi-Tech water retainer;
1/3 were treated with 1 kg of carbon soil;
1/3 were not treated with any amendments (control group).
Nursery experiment:
30 flower pots, each with 5 grams of Maenam Hi-Tech water retainer;
30 flower pots, with carbon soil;
30 flower pots as the control group, without additions; every 10 flower pots were sown with seeds of trees, shrubs and herbs.
In order to maximize the effect of the water retainer of Maenam Hi-Tech, the research team scientifically adjusted the ratio of the water retainer to meet the growth needs and water consumption characteristics of different plants.
At present, the nursery area has shown an encouraging growth trend. The follow-up team will continue to follow up and observe, and compare the experimental data of each group, especially with the effect of CarboSoil. This progress indicates that the huge potential of Maenam Hi-Tech's water retainer in the field of desertification control has been initially verified.

The successful implementation of this project has not only brought remarkable greening results to the vast desert area of Saudi Arabia, but also provided extremely valuable practical experience and inspiration for desertification control in the entire Middle East, and set a new benchmark for global ecological environmental protection and sustainable development.
